Affordable Roof Repair London is a phone line, a patch of north London, and a network of independently owned roofing companies. We have taken roofing calls since 2008, answering around the clock for leaks and storm damage, and what follows is a plain account of who we are, what we know and how a job runs.
Eighteen Years on One Patch of North London
We started taking calls in 2008, working from 20 Seven Sisters Road, London N7 6AG, and we made an early decision that has shaped everything since. Instead of covering all of London thinly, we concentrated on Holloway and the districts around it: Finsbury Park, Highbury and Barnsbury. That meant learning the roofs street by street, so the person who answers the phone has a fair idea of what a stain on a Holloway Road ceiling or a slate on a Barnsbury pavement is likely to mean.
Georgian Parapets and Victorian Slate Set the Pattern
Islington's late-Georgian and early-Victorian terraces were built between the 1780s and 1860s, and many hide butterfly roofs behind parapet walls. The Victorian streets nearer Holloway and Finsbury Park have slate pitches, tall party-wall stacks and lead-lined valleys. Those features are the leak points, which is why chimney and leadwork and roof repairs come up so often.
Rain Spread Evenly, Not Dramatically
London gets roughly 600 mm of rain a year, about 597 mm at Heathrow on the Met Office's 1981 to 2010 averages, but it falls evenly through the year. That steady wetting finds every flaw in a flashing, and the damage is slow rather than dramatic, which is why a roof can leak for months before a stain appears.
Four Patches, Four Kinds of Roof
The areas we cover are not the same, and the copy on each page reflects that.
Holloway
Dense Victorian and Edwardian streets either side of Holloway Road, many converted to flats, with Hillmarton and Mercers Road/Tavistock Terrace conservation areas inside the district.
Finsbury Park
Victorian terraces with long rear additions and mature park trees on the edge, covered on our Finsbury Park page.
Highbury
Georgian terraces around the Fields and listed villas on Highbury New Park, covered on our Highbury page.
Barnsbury
Islington's largest conservation area, with butterfly roofs, parapet gutters and Welsh slate, covered on our Barnsbury page.
Why We Work Through Partner Companies
We do not run our own roofing crews. Every job is carried out by an independently owned local roofing company, and the point is fit: a conservation-area slate repair, a flat-roof re-cover and a parapet-gutter re-lining need different skills, and the closest available partner that suits the job is a better answer than whoever happens to be next on a single rota. The partner quotes in writing, invoices you and takes payment directly. We handle no payment or invoices.
Planning Rules Are Part of the Job
Most of the patch is inside Islington, with the Finsbury Park and Stroud Green side of N4 possibly under Haringey. Both councils can restrict roof alterations in conservation areas, so we raise the planning position at the first call rather than after a quote.
If We Cannot Take a Job, We Find You Someone Who Can
Some jobs we cannot take on ourselves. A storm week fills the diary, a job needs a specialism that our usual partners do not cover, or the address sits outside our patch. When that happens we say so on the call rather than leaving you waiting, and we put you in touch with one of our partner roofing companies who can come out. In that case the partner roofing company quotes you, invoices you and takes payment directly, and we handle no payment or invoices.
A Straight Handover, Never a Dead End
The aim is simple: nobody who rings 07883 305739 should be left without a way forward. The process is the same one set out on how we work. If you are weighing us against other firms, start with the home page for the full picture, browse all roofing services, read what customers say, check the terms of service or go to contact.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long has Affordable Roof Repair London been going?
We have taken roofing calls since 2008, which makes 2026 our eighteenth year working the same patch of north London. That time has been spent on the terraces and villas of Holloway, Finsbury Park, Highbury and Barnsbury, so we know which faults recur and which streets are protected. We mention the date because it tells you how long the phone has been answered, not as a claim about any badge or scheme.
What does affordable actually mean in your name?
It means we start from the cheapest sound fix, not the biggest job. A handful of slipped slates is re-fixed before anyone mentions a re-roof, a lead flashing is re-dressed before a stack is rebuilt, and a blocked valley is cleared before a ceiling is replaced. We do not claim to be the cheapest, and the partner company sets the price in writing. The point is honest scope and no unnecessary work.
Do you do the roofing yourselves?
No. Every job is carried out by an independently owned local roofing company in our partner network, which surveys the roof, quotes in writing, does the work, invoices you and takes payment directly. We take the call, find the partner that can get out soonest and suits the job, and text you its name before anyone arrives. If something goes wrong you ring us and we chase it. See how we work.
Why do you talk so much about Georgian and Victorian roofs?
Because they are most of what we are asked about. Islington's terraces from the 1780s to 1860s have butterfly roofs and parapet gutters, and the Victorian streets around Holloway and Finsbury Park have slate pitches, party-wall stacks and lead valleys. Those details leak in predictable ways, and a roofer who knows them finds the fault faster. A generic approach to roofs misses what is specific to these streets.
How does London's weather affect the roofs you see?
London is not a wet city by UK standards, with roughly 600 mm of rain a year, but the rain falls evenly through every month and November is the wettest at about 68 mm. That steady wetting keeps lead, flashings and mortar damp, so small defects grow over years. Frost then does further damage to weak coverings. The result is more slow leaks than dramatic storm failures.
Do conservation areas change how a roof job is planned?
They can, often significantly. Islington has 42 conservation areas and has removed permitted development rights by Article 4 direction in 40 of them, including Barnsbury, Highbury Fields, Highbury New Park, Hillmarton, Mercers Road/Tavistock Terrace and Tufnell Park. Like-for-like repair is generally fine, but changing materials or adding rooflights usually needs permission. We raise this at the first call.
What gets written down before work starts?
The partner company's survey findings, the scope of work, the materials, the labour and the price, set out in a written quote you receive before anything is touched. Where scaffolding, insulation or lead is involved, those are itemised. We do not quote jobs ourselves or promise a price, because the partner company carries out the survey and sets its own price. The written quote is what you agree to.
What standards does the work follow?
Slating and tiling follows BS 5534, flat roofs follow BS 6229 with felt to BS 8217, and lead sheet work follows BS EN 12588. Building Regulations Part C covers moisture, Part L covers energy and Approved Document B covers fire spread. We describe the standard the work is built to, because that is something you can check against the quote, unlike a logo on a website.
Which areas do you cover?
Holloway, Finsbury Park, Highbury and Barnsbury, with Tufnell Park, Stroud Green and the wider London Borough of Islington close by. We are based at 20 Seven Sisters Road, London N7 6AG. Ring 07883 305739 with your postcode and we will tell you who can attend and roughly when. If an address is outside what the partners can reach, we say so rather than leaving you waiting.
What if I am not sure which service I need?
Ring 07883 305739 and describe what you can see: a stain, a missing slate, a gutter overflowing. The category usually becomes clear in a minute or two, and the partner company's survey settles the rest. You can also look through our ten roofing services to see where your problem fits. Nobody will push a larger job on you than the roof needs.
